Latest weather for the High Atlas mountains

Last Thursday finally brought a combination of lower temperatures and precipitation - in other words snow on south facing slopes above 2750m. On north facing aspects and sheltered valleys the snowline is around 2350m.

The coming week brings the freezing level back up above 3000m later this week causing some snowmelt and a regression in the snowline.

Freezing level set to drop

It's getting colder in the High Atlas Mountains....!

Current snow levels

Following the huge rainfalls of recent weeks in the south and particularly in the Western High Atlas, we've now been able to get out into the mountains after some road and bridge repairs!

Slopes with north facing aspects have snow down to around 3000m whilst south facing slopes is much higher at around 3500m or higher in some areas. Although there was a huge rainfall the temperatures at the time were very mild which resulted in only some snow - but a complete filling of all the reservoirs!

The photo below was taken yesterday from high up the Tizi n'Test road and shows the Tazaghart plateau with villages near Ijoukak region in the foreground.
